TAKE ACTION: Protect Your Community from Marijuana Commercialization

UPDATE: Senate Bill 49 is moving through the Senate, with a vote in the Senate Law and Justice Committee scheduled for this week.

Right now, the marijuana industry is targeting Pennsylvania, aggressively lobbying for legislation that would force communities to allow pot shops selling high-potency THC marijuana products for recreational use.

Expanding access to addictive marijuana products poses real risks to Pennsylvania’s children and families. Even The New York Times recently highlighted the growing public health concerns surrounding today’s high-potency marijuana. Commercialization makes communities worse.

There are several bills currently being lobbied in Harrisburg by the Big Marijuana industry, including:
  • Senate Bill 49: Would create an unelected control board with sweeping authority over marijuana policy, with significant power over regulation and expansion, potentially laying the groundwork for full recreational legalization. It would also subsidize marijuana use with your tax dollars.
  • Senate Bill 120: A 181-page proposal (including language from Senate Bill 49) that would legalize recreational marijuana use statewide. It would remove meaningful local control over retail marijuana shops, contain no THC potency caps, and risk increased youth exposure, addiction, and impaired driving.
States that have commercialized the recreational use of marijuana have seen increases in emergency room visits, mental health challenges, impaired driving, and ongoing illicit market activity. Pennsylvania should learn from those outcomes—not repeat them.
Governor Josh Shapiro is pushing for this type of marijuana legalization, prioritizing embellished revenue projections with no analysis of the costs. When policy discussions deal with such an addictive and dangerous drug, the priority must be public health and safety, not industry profits.

Act Now: Contact your State Senator and Representative today. Urge them to reject marijuana commercialization and oppose bills like Senate Bill 49 and Senate Bill 120.
