Urge KY General Assembly to Support Educational Freedom

Kentucky is falling behind on educational freedom. A recent study found that Kentucky ranks 48th in the nation in education freedom, putting our citizens at a significant disadvantage compared to the rest of the nation. Thankfully, several legislators have filed bills that would help improve our standing.

HB 88 from Rep. TJ Roberts would opt Kentucky into the new federal tax credit scholarship program. Last year, Congress created this new program as a part of the "Big Beautiful Bill." However, the Senate parliamentarian required language creating an opt-in system for states to participate. Gov. Beshear opposes educational freedom, which means the General Assembly must act in order for Kentucky citizens to benefit. HB 88 would do just that.

Additionally, Kentucky must improve the rights of homeschool families. Right now, homeschoolers are not eligible to play sports with their local teams, despite their parent's tax dollars paying for most of sports facilities. Additionally, homeschoolers are not eligible to receive KEES money scholarships when they go to college in Kentucky.

Rep. Ryan Dotson has filed HB 421, which would allow homeschoolers to play sports with their local team. Rep. Felicia Rabourn has filed HB 275, and Rep. Shane Baker has filed HB 298. These bills would allow homeschool students to be eligible for KEES money. HB 421, HB 275, and HB 298 are all commonsense bills that would expand education freedom in Kentucky.

Please urge your representative and senator to support and cosponsor HB 88, HB 421, HB 275, and HB 298.
