Encourage KY Legislators to Protect Our Kids From Social Media Harms

Rep. Matt Lockett has introduced HB 227, which would create commonsense regulations on social media companies. Depression amongst teenagers has doubled since the social media revolution, largely due to the addictive features that social media companies use. Additionally, social media has exposed kids to harmful content, including pornographic images and videos. It is time the General Assembly take action to put guardrails in place on these companies to protect Kentucky's kids and empower parents.

HB 227 would require social media companies to use their existing algorithms to estimate the ages of their users. When a social media company knows a minor under 17 is on the platform, the company would have to receive parental consent for the minor to keep access to his account. Additionally, the bill would ban addictive features on the accounts of minors, helping to limit the harmful effects of social media. The bill does all this while protecting the First Amendment rights of social media users.

Please take action today, so that Kentucky can proactively protect our children from online harms.
