Encourage KY Legislators to End the Church Sales Tax
Churches serve an essential role in their communities, providing significant benefit through their ministry focus. That's why they deserve tax-exempt status...However, churches with sports outreach ministries are now being forced to register with the state and become tax collectors. Further, state law requires that churches must collect sales taxes on things like Wednesday night prayer dinners, Bible study books, and youth ministry trips. That's burdensome and hurts our Commonwealth. For these reasons, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), which serves around 2,400 churches and over 700,000 Kentuckians, passed a resolution last year urging the General Assembly to remove the sales tax burden on church ministries.House Bill 101, filed by Rep. James Tipton, seeks to remove this burden, and ensure that our churches remain free to pursue their religious, charitable, and educational missions. Unfortunately, House leadership opposes HB 101, despite it having 53 sponsors, and refuses to move the bill. However, the Senate has an opportunity to address this important issue with an amendment to the revenue bill.
Please take action today to ensure Kentucky churches remain free to focus on their ministry, not government tax collection.
