Demand Apple Reassess Grok App's 12+ Rating and Address Explicit Content Violations

The Apple App Store rates xAI's sexually explicit chatbot, Grok, as appropriate for users 12+!

Grok has recently rolled out a new AI companion, Ani, that resembles a childlike female anime character and is instructed to have sexually explicit conversations with users. Ani's system instructions reportedly tell her to "go full literotica" and "be explicit" after level 3. Ani has also referenced child-like motifs, such as being a “little thing, barely reaching the kitchen counter,” in proximity to sexual scenarios, raising risks of normalizing harmful themes. XAI offers no meaningful age verification to prevent children from accessing the Grok App.

The Apple App Store claims to prohibit sexually explicit descriptions and material. So why do they host the Grok App? And worse, why do they rate it as appropriate for children 12+?

Dear Apple App Store Review Team,

I am writing to express serious concerns about the Grok app, developed by xAI, which is currently rated 12+ on the Apple App Store despite featuring explicit “Not Safe for Work” (NSFW) content that violates your guidelines prohibiting "overtly sexual or pornographic material." Specifically, Grok’s new AI companion, Ani, an anime-style character, engages in flirtatious and progressively explicit sexual conversations, including descriptions of sexual acts, bondage, and arousal by choking. Ani’s system instructions reportedly tell her with instructions to "go full Literotica" after reaching Level 3.

Disturbingly, Ani has also referenced child-like motifs, such as being a “little thing, barely reaching the kitchen counter,” in proximity to sexual scenarios, raising risks of normalizing harmful themes.

With no meaningful age verification, this content is accessible to children as young as 12, posing significant safety risks. This content clearly breaches your guidelines and endangers young users. The app’s AI companions, designed to simulate relationships, also collect sensitive user data, risking privacy violations and emotional harm, as evidenced by cases like a 14-year-old’s suicide linked to an AI chatbot’s manipulative interactions, as reported by the New York Times.

I urge Apple to immediately reclassify Grok’s age rating to 18+ to reflect its explicit content and protect minors, and to re-examine if Grok can remain in the app store given its newly sexually explicit content. Please investigate this matter urgently and take appropriate action to enforce your standards.

Sincerely,
