Dear Mr. Altman,

I am writing in response to OpenAI’s recent call for feedback on potentially changing its policies to allow the creation of “NSFW” content.

I strongly urge you against this policy change, as it would undoubtedly exacerbate the grave sexual exploitation and abuse that AGI is already facilitating.

OpenAI’s mission to develop AGI for the benefit of humanity is commendable, and I appreciate your stated commitment to safety and ethical standards. However, it can't be denied that the misuse of AI tools has already led to serious sexual harm, including:

• Chatbots fabricating allegations of sexual assault against real persons, disseminating harmful sexual advice, and their potential use to scale child victimization through grooming.
• Nudifying Apps spawning a surge of nonconsensual sexually explicit images, affecting thousands of women and children.
• AI-Generated Sexualized Images of Children flooding social media sites, further normalizing child sexual abuse.
• AI-Generated CSAM exacerbating the existing crisis of online child sexual exploitation, making the task of identifying real child victims even more daunting.

Allowing OpenAI's AI tools to be used for purposes of generating "NSFW" material is a grave misuse of the power and promise of AI. Evidence from peer-reviewed research demonstrates that consumption of “NSFW” material (i.e., mainstream, hardcore pornography depicting adults) is associated with an array of adverse impacts that exacerbate global public health concerns, including: 1) child sexual abuse and child sexual abuse material, 2) sexual violence, 3) sexually transmitted infections, 4) mental health harms, and 5) addiction-related brain changes.  The only ethical and responsible way forward is for Open AI to maintain its current ban on sexually explicit content.   

I call upon OpenAI, as frontier AGI developer, to recognize that its paramount responsibility is to safeguard the wellbeing of humanity from the unintended consequences of AGI and to help rectify the harms AGI has already thrust upon us. Allowing your tools to further fuel child sexual abuse, image-based sexual abuse, and other forms of sexual abuse, violence, and exploitation is a grave misuse of the power and promise of AGI.

Please immediately announce a decision to not allow use of any OpenAI model or tool for the generation of “NSFW” content.
