Ask the United Nations to Adopt Crucial Report on Prostitution!

Prostitution and Violence against Women and Girls is a groundbreaking report written by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Reem Alsalem.

The report tells the truth about prostitution with astonishing clarity, examining it as a system of exploitation that perpetuates male violence against women and girls. Among many important topics, it discusses weaponized “consent,” the commodification of women, the links between pornography and prostitution, the role of demand (male sex buying behavior), and the effects they have on women’s and girls’ mental health.

Join us in calling for the UN Human Rights Council to immediately adopt this astonishingly honest report.

I am writing to request the United States’ support for the immediate adoption of the report Prostitution and Violence Against Women and Girls, written by UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls report, Reem Alsalem.

The importance of adopting this report cannot be overstated, especially considering that many of the UN’s previous publications on prostitution have propagated inaccuracies and harmful recommendations.

Alsalem’s report is an astonishingly honest discussion of the violence and exploitation inherent to prostitution, the physical and mental health harms suffered by prostituted persons, and prostitution’s link with other forms of sexual exploitation such as pornography and image-based sexual abuse.

The report includes crucial research and fact-based analyses, as well as strong calls to action. Importantly, the report urges states to stop acting as pimps by condoning prostitution in their legislation. Instead, it provides a pathway for states to support exploited persons and address prostitution from the perspective of human rights and women’s equality.

I express full support for this magnificent report and urge the UN Human Rights Council to adopt it without reservation or delay.

Sincerely,
